Scherry Levi Obituary

When seeds are planted into the lives of others and are watered with love and care, others will reap a harvest of sweet memories that will follow them everywhere. Thus was the life and legacy of our beloved, Scherry Jean Preston Levi.

Scherry Jean Preston, the daughter of now the late Dwight Prestson Sr. and Marie Becknell Preston, was born on Friday, May 19, 1939, in Tyler, Texas. She shared her life and love with family and friends and lived in the fullness.

Scherry Jean Preston accepted Christ at an early age. Upon moving to Bay City, Texas she became a lifelong member of Tyree Chapel A.M. E. Church where she served faithfully and proved to be a good steward.

Scherry graduated from A. G. Hillard High Scholl in 1957. She attended Prairie View School of Nursing for 3 years, which was a four-year program. Scherry left the nursing program and still graduated in four years with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. The degree she received in 1961 was in Physical Education and Health, with a minor in Dance and Biology. Later, she began a Master’s degree program at Prairie View A& M and completed it at am Houston State University in 1972, with a Master’s Degree in Kinesiology and Motor Skills, Physical Education, Health, and Dance, with a minor in Biology.

After thirty-six years of teaching Scherry J. Preston Levi will be missed. Eighteen of those years have been at H. J. McAllister Junior High School as the girls Coach and teaching Physical Education.

Scherry Preston was married to James Levi, and shared their love and compassion with two sons, Shelley Levi and Reginauld Levi, as well as her grandchild she adored. Her home was always an atmosphere of love, welcome and comfort to those who entered therein. Her devotion to family was remarkable, and her happiness for them was one of her greatest aspirations. She preferred not being known for titles or positions, but rather for her love for family and the courageous manner she lived for that humble purpose.

She served dutifully with social, civic, and various community affairs where her ambitions, arts and crafts, and her sincere devotion and involvement were all sincere, acknowledged and appreciated. She was a proud member of the Bay City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

She was affectionately known and admired as “Cookie” and was always willing to find her place in the sun. Her radiant smile, her cheerfulness and her extraordinary, sweet disposition were just a few of the attributes which made up her beautiful life. By her passing, she will be greatly missed but happy are they who shared her life while here on earth.

Her transition from this life came peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2022. Being comforted by the scriptural message from II Timothy 4:7 saying "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.

She leaves many loving memories to her son, Shelley Levi, and grandchildren, Duanavaughn, Rashad, Shelby, Stephanie, and Tia, as well as 15 great grandchildren. She also leaves brother, Artis Preston (Justine) and a special nephew De’Artis Preston special nieces Charita Preston and Raquel Wilson. Scherry will be truly missed by her great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Besides her parents Dwight and Marie Preston, she was preceded in death by her son Reginauld Levi a grandson, Marcel Levi her siblings, Dwight Preston Jr., Dr. Michael Preston, Doris Preston, Gwendolyn Preston, and a niece Eva Preston.

Life’s race well run …           Life’s work well done …           And now she is resting!!!
