Remembering Deacon Samuel Matthews, Jr.
…In The Beginning
On Wednesday, December 30, 1936, in Pledger, Texas, Samuel Matthews, Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Matthews, Sr. and Annie Mae (Mack) Matthews. Samuel attended and was a proud graduate of Hilliard High School in Bay City, Texas.
Throughout his life, Samuel was passionate about serving others and spending time outdoors. He coached little league baseball and enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, working on cars, and cooking for his family.
…The Two Shall Become One
On November 21, 1989, Samuel was united in marriage to Ruby Lee Matthews, a loving union that lasted more than 30 years.
…Train Up a Child in the Way He Should Go
Samuel accepted Christ at Tyree Chapel AME Church. He later united with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon under the leadership of Pastor Michael Riddick, II. In later years, he joined New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. T. L. Richardson.
…A Hard Worker
After retiring from the Celanese Chemical Plant, Samuel found great joy in spending time with his family and friends—and in the simple pleasure of mowing his lawn.
…In That Great Getting Up Morning
Samuel’s earthly journey came to a close on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
He leaves to cherish his memory and celebrate his life:
Daughters: Gladys Matthews, Patricia Martin, and Lori George
Sons: Reginald O’Keith Matthews, Kenneth Vaughn Matthews, Michael Young, and Billy Joe Young
Grandchildren: 22
Great-Grandchildren: 27
As well as a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruby Matthews; his parents, Samuel Sr. and Annie Mae Matthews; three sons, Samuel DeWayne, Kevin Mitchell, and Darryl Lynn Matthews; and grandchildren, DeWayne O’Keith Green and Kendal Lynn Matthews.
