Samuel Matthews, Jr. Obituary

Remembering Deacon Samuel Matthews, Jr.

…In The Beginning

On Wednesday, December 30, 1936, in Pledger, Texas, Samuel Matthews, Jr. was born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Matthews, Sr. and Annie Mae (Mack) Matthews. Samuel attended and was a proud graduate of Hilliard High School in Bay City, Texas.

Throughout his life, Samuel was passionate about serving others and spending time outdoors. He coached little league baseball and enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, working on cars, and cooking for his family.

…The Two Shall Become One

On November 21, 1989, Samuel was united in marriage to Ruby Lee Matthews, a loving union that lasted more than 30 years.

…Train Up a Child in the Way He Should Go

Samuel accepted Christ at Tyree Chapel AME Church. He later united with Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where he was ordained as a deacon under the leadership of Pastor Michael Riddick, II. In later years, he joined New Hope Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. T. L. Richardson.

…A Hard Worker

After retiring from the Celanese Chemical Plant, Samuel found great joy in spending time with his family and friends—and in the simple pleasure of mowing his lawn.
