Roosevelt Hudgins Obituary

On November 20th, 1930, a son was born in Hudgins Settlement to Thomas and Helen Hudgins, they named him Roosevelt & he was the eighth of nine children born to this union.

Roosevelt accepted CHRIST as his LORD and SAVIOR at an early age as many of his siblings and family members had done before him. He attended Free System Baptist Church in Van Vleck, Tx. Under Rev. Draper which later turned to St. John Baptist Church and was led by Rev. Dixon then Rev. Ollie Reynolds then Pastor Ruben Newell. Following CHRIST was very strong in his family and the community he grew up in, that strong foundation was reflected throughout his life.

Roosevelt attended the local educational system and graduated from Herman High School in Van Vleck, Tx. He excelled academically & athletically which yielded him obtaining a track scholarship to Prairie View A&M University. He would tell the story of how in high school he would run the Quarter in 45 seconds………. on dirt and would train sometimes when he’d see a jack rabbit across the field and when the rabbit takes off running, he would chase it, run up beside and pick it up by its ears…….he would then LOL.

Roosevelt met his future wife, Barbara Jean Ware one day while her family was working for the Hudgins family in the cotton field and as she was coming up the row picking……. He saw her and started going down the same row picking and singing to her as he approached, she knew that he was the one for her. After two years of college, he was drafted into the U.S Army. He was sent to Chicago, lL. for basic training and asked Barbara to go with him and were shortly married once they got there. He served the Country from Dec. 9th, 1953, to Dec. 10th, 1955, during the Korean War. He served his bride for 65 years before she passed away in 2017.

Preceded in transition were:  Barbara Jean Ware-Hudgins (Wife), Tony Baron Hudgins (Son), Rosanna Sharee Hudgins-Thomas (Daughter), Thomas Hudgins Jr. (Father), Helen Jones-Hudgins (Mother), Mack Hudgins (Brother), Kenchlo Hudgins (Brother), Ella Louise Hudgins-Williams (Sister), Ernest Hudgins (Brother), Thomas Hudgins III (Brother), Stella Hudgins-Tone (Sister), Bessie Hudgins-Monroe (Sister), Willie Lee Hudgins-Hughes (Sister)
