Odelia Faye Stratton Peters
On Monday, July 21, 1947, Beatrice Stratton and Osby Stratton, Sr. welcomed their baby girl, Odelia Faye into the world. Even as a young girl, Odelia was highly intelligent and smart. This proved to be a great blessing in her life as she graduated with honors and was offered a scholarship to college.
While in college she married her high school sweetheart, Sam Peters, Jr. As they were starting their family, Sam was drafted into the United States Army and returned home from active duty following her graduation from Prairie View. After a couple years of marriage, the Lord blessed them with their first child and seven years later their second son was born.
Although the family relocated several times for career opportunities, Odelia was always able to secure a position where her nursing expertise could be utilized. She was a go-getter who knew her stuff and was respected among her medical colleagues.
Outside of her professional life, she enjoyed going fishing. Yes, from Redfish, to Drums or Flounders, she could fish with the best of them. Not only did she enjoy going fishing, but she also enjoyed eating fish and seafood. Yes, fry her a batch of fish, shrimp and / or oysters and she was a happy lady. However, she didn’t limit herself to seafood, she also enjoyed eating other ‘delicacies’ such as oxtails and chitterlings. Yes, that for her was good eating.
Odelia enjoyed spending time with her family. Listening to classical soul music from the Temptations, The 4 Tops, Al Green, and Johnny Matthis to watching The Rifleman or MSNBC was relaxing for her. She was a sports fan as well. She loved the Houston Texans and later split her sports dedication between The Rockets and The Spurs.
What was most important in her life was her relationship with God. This foundation was laid as a child when she attended Palacios Church Of God in Christ and later when she united with Carverdal Community Fellowship COGIC. For believers, to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. On Tuesday, July 24, 2024, Odelia gained her wings. There are so many things that will be missed about her including her non-judgmental conversations where she showed herself to be a dependable friend and family member who loved and cared for others. There are many who will reflect on these and other precious memories including her son, Harold Peters of Flower Mound, TX; her brother: Osby (Wanda) Stratton, Jr. of Georgetown, TX; her grandchildren: Elijah Cash, Amarie Peters, Anayah Peters, Heaven Peters, and Xavier Peters; her niece Charolette Stratton, and others special to her including Sam Peters, Jr. as well as a host of friends, nursing colleagues, church members, and loved ones. It is in times like these that we reflect on those who have gone before her including her son, Shannon Peters; her mother Beatrice Stratton Haynes; her father Osby Stratton, Sr., and her stepdad Chester Haynes.
