Remembering Gay
On Friday, May 17, 1957, Phillip Green, Jr. and Helen Thomas Green welcomed their beloved daughter, Gay Letbetha Green, into the world. From a young age, Gay brought joy and laughter to everyone around her. She was a lively child who loved playing board games, pick-up sticks, jacks, and cards. She also enjoyed reading and spending time at the Boys and Girls Club or the local recreation center.
Gay was a proud graduate of Bay City High School in Bay City, Texas. She also earned a bachelor's degree which led her into a meaningful career in client service and administrative roles, dedicating over fifteen years to Uncle Ben’s (now Ben’s Original) and more than three years at JP Morgan Chase, formerly known as Bank One.
Gay was most proud of her role as a mother. She and her husband, Adedeji Olufemi Obe, welcomed a daughter, Lola Obe, who became the center of their world.
To her loved ones, Gay was affectionately known as “Lady Shine”, “Momsberry,” and the Queen of the Side Hustle. She was a fun-loving, humorous, and courageous woman with a commanding presence and deep wisdom. Gay was known for her loyalty and integrity—if she gave her word, she kept it. She lived life with resilience and grace, a proud and accomplished Black woman who understood that life was a game best played with honor.
Her passions included shopping, cooking, and savoring her favorite foods—shrimp, pork chop sandwiches, spaghetti and meatballs, and especially her famous German chocolate cake. Despite various health challenges, Gay embraced life with vitality and joy, always living to the fullest.
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Gay transitioned and went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
She leaves behind her cherished daughter, Lola Obe; her loving siblings, Gary Green (Jackie) and Gina Green; and a host of relatives, friends, and loved ones who will forever hold her in their hearts. She joins in eternal rest her husband Adedeji Olufemi Obe, her beloved parents, and her grandparents.
Though words can never fully capture her spirit, the memories of Gay’s life—her laughter, strength, generosity, and love—will live on in all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.
