Evelyn Gray Obituary

Reflection of Life

On Wednesday, June 19, 1946 Alonzo and Evelyn Johnson welcomed into the world little baby Evelyn Patricia Johnson.  With one sister and four brothers Evelyn was the second oldest of six children.

She spent her formative years in San Francisco, California where she grew up in a Christian family home.  She confessed Christ at and early age and united with the Bayview Bible Church where The Reverend Scott served as her pastor.

A Time to Educate

Evelyn Patricia “Pat” was a graduate of Mission High School’s Class of 1965.  She attended San Francisco State University where she majored in Psychology in 1975.

As a true servant, Pat worked in various positions throughout her life in several hospitals.  She started her career working as a clerk at Laguna Honda Hospital as well as San Francisco General Hospital.  She also worked a union representative for Services Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 250 in its hospital division.   Her servant leadership qualities lead her career to working as a manager at Alameda County Hospitals.

A Time to Love

Pat’s love for helping others extended to her volunteerism throughout the years as a Girl Scout Leader, Sunday School teacher and a choir member at Bayview Bible Church.  After relocating to Clute, Texas she joined Zion Temple AME Church.  She later joined Trinity Light Church and served as the Event Coordinator as well as served on the intercessory pray team.  She also volunteered at a local retirement facility.

A Time to Plant, A Time to Build Up

Pat loved to laugh, eat out and shop at the mall.  Pat also enjoyed watching good dramas or comedies as well as talking on the phone with her girlfriends.  She looked forward to what became her annual trip of boarding a cruise ship and cruising to the Bahamas.  Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her children from playing Jacks with them when they were small to sharing with them how proud she was of them as mature adults.  She really loved being a mother and was especially proud of her grandchildren.  Besides her three daughters she was a foster mother for a number of children during her time in Clute.  All who love her dearly will never forget her sense of humor, wisdom and her warmth.

A Time to Die

On Thursday morning, July 18th at the age of 73 years old, on the ‘Wings of Death’ our ‘Beloved Evelyn’ took flight into the land where ‘There is no night’.  In this land she looked forward to being reunited with her two brothers Don Alonzo and Mark Johnson, as well as, her sister Ruth Diane Kimball who went home to be with the Lord before her. Her brothers: James Johnson and Paul Johnson; her daughters: Shelly Leonard, Darrylena (Robert) Fields, and Dawn Leonard; her grandchildren: Jasmenda Brown, and Ashley Leonard; two greatgrandchildren: Syncere Coleman, and Serenity Brown; niece: Cynthia Wheeler; nephews: Don Johnson, Mario Johnson, Marquan Johnson, Maurice Kimball, and Dana Wheeler; cousins: Jackie Glover, Betty Hoffman, and Ruby Johnson.  No one can count the other host of relatives and friends who will often reflect on precious memories of Pat.
