Edna (Gatson) Polk

On August 6, 1944, in Buckner’s Prairie, TX, Enoch Gatson, Sr. and Hartense Gatson, welcomed their first daughter, Edna Polk into the world. Early in her life, she accepted Christ at First Berean Missionary Baptist Church. Edna graduated from OH Herman High School in Van Vleck, Tx. On June 29, 1963, she united in holy matrimony with the love of her life, Henderson Polk Sr. Through this union, they had three beautiful children: Henderson Jr., Nina, and Sherri.

She was a faithful member of Vine Grove Christian Church. On any given Sunday, you could find her singing a beautiful alto-tenor note in the Choir. Family was everything to Edna, whether cheering on her children at their many activities or making teacakes for her nieces and nephews to enjoy. She loved to sew, keeping her children in the latest fashions. She also stayed active by walking and swimming with some of her closest friends. Edna loved a famous Blackcat fight, with her husband right by her side, both serving Bay City ISD for over 30 years. In retirement, she enjoyed spending time watching football, especially her beloved Cowboys, even though her husband rooted for that other Texas team. Edna loved shopping and getting dolled up, as well as traveling with family.

On Monday, April 21, 2025, Edna was called to her heavenly home. She will be remembered as a truly devoted wife and mother, who dedicated her life to serving God & honoring her family. She will be remembered earth side by her children: Henderson Polk Jr. (Debra), of Barstow, CA; Nina and Sherri Polk, both of Richmond, TX; grandchildren: LaPrincess Polk, Henderson Polk III, LaPrecious Polk, and Prinston Polk; great grandchildren: Jaylin Booker, Mackenzie Jones, Janelle, Dallas, Delila, and David Polk. Her siblings: J.D Gatson (Wilma), Moses Gatson (Venita), Oscar Gatson (Leah), Enoch Gatson Jr. (Rita), Debra Gatson, and sister in love Alice Gatson; godchildren Akeysha Cannon and Catriona Gatson; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, family friends, and loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Enoch and Hartense Gatson Sr.; Sisters: Loretta, Ethel, and Lottie Gatson, Mary Lou Claiborne; Brother: Leonard Gatson; Parents in Love: Robert and Azalena Polk.
