Reflections of Life
Sunday, March 8, 1964, went down as a date in history! It was on that date that Ruby and Booker Holbert, Sr. will never forget, their baby boy, Booker T. Holbert, II made his entry into the world. Little Booker was a born leader that possessed a strong personality. Even as a young child, playing outside with his brother and neighborhood kids, Booker was in was obvious that Booker was in charge. Yes, it did not matter if they were playing basketball, baseball, or just simply playing in the streets, Booker was running things.
In school, Booker was a straight “A” student. He was consistently on the honor roll. Not only was he a smart student but playing ball growing up in the neighborhood and working out a lot also made him very athletic. He played high school basketball until the eleventh grade when he decided to step aside from basketball and focus more time on his studies. Because of his academic achievement he was selected to travel to Colorado with some of his peers as a reward for their academic excellence. Booker graduated from Bay City High School in 1982. Booker attended and graduated from Lamar University with a Bachelor of Science in 1989. While at Lamar Booker became an active member of The Epsilon Rho Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Following graduation from Lamar Booker elected to serve his county. He enlisted in the United States Army where he served two years active duty and two years in the reserve. Later Booker attended and graduated from the University of Central Texas in 1994 with a Master of Science in Computer Information Systems.
Booker landed a position with NASA in the computer science department. Although this was a great opportunity Booker decided to pursue his dream of entrepreneurship. He launched B. Holbert Consulting, a firm which helped people seek a second chance by offering credit repair services as well as real estate opportunities.
Booker loved his family, looked forward to spending time with his parents and his daughter. He was a straight-forward person who possessed a strong will; however, he was very thoughtful and caring. He was his ‘own man’ who made his own decisions. Sink or swim, he did it his way. He did not cave to society’s norms but stood his ground. A man of integrity whose word was his bond. If he promised someone something he was going to do everything in his power to keep his promise. For Booker, these decisions worked out for him, and he lived a successful life.
Booker’s health battle ended on Saturday, September 18, 2021. His time spent serving the Lord at New Faith Baptist Church was rewarded as he gained his wings. His presence and strong will shall be missed. Those who will often reflect on these and other precious memories include his loving daughter, Kendall Leigh Holbert of Pearland, TX; his parents, Ruby and Booker Holbert, Sr.; his brothers Marlon (Clorisa) Holbert of Humble, TX and Bryan Holbert of New Orleans, LA; aunts and uncles Deborah (Floyd )Edison, Mary Holbert, Dorothy Minter, Estella Scott, and Juanita Vinson.
Family members who made the transition before him include his grandparents Earl and Rosa Scott and Freeman and Artificial Holbert and others including Alfred Bowie, Michael Gunn, Freeman Holbert, Jr., Robert Holbert, Willie Minter, Leon Scott, and Maurice Vinson.
